It might be called Earth but this blue planet of ours is actually 70% ocean.
The ocean serves as a climate regulator, provides us with food and livelihoods, and is home to a beautiful display of biodiversity. It’s a major cog in our precious water cycle, and life on this planet wouldn’t exist without it.
So when you think of Earth Day, think of the Ocean.
To celebrate Earth Day, here are some of my favourite poetry, literature, paintings, and photographs that celebrate our Blue Planet.
Enjoy.
Literature:
“The sea is everything. It covers seven tenths of the terrestrial globe. Its breath is pure and healthy. It is an immense desert, where man is never lonely, for he feels life stirring on all sides. The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the Living Infinite.”
― Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1869)
Paintings:
Poetry:
The Ocean has its silent caves, Deep, quiet, and alone; Though there be fury on the waves, Beneath them there is none. The awful spirits of the deep Hold their communion there; And there are those for whom we weep, The young, the bright, the fair. Calmly the wearied seamen rest Beneath their own blue sea. The ocean solitudes are blest, For there is purity. The earth has guilt, the earth has care, Unquiet are its graves; But peaceful sleep is ever there, Beneath the dark blue waves. — The Ocean by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Photography:
“How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is quite clearly ocean.”
— Arthur C. Clarke
"The Earth is blue. How wonderful. It is amazing."
— Yuri Gagarin
“Nowhere is more powerful and unforgiving, yet more beautiful and endlessly fascinating than the ocean.”
— David Attenborough
Here at Beached we are building a community that can put our brains and resources together to highlight and fund solutions to the problems facing the ocean. I hope you’ll join our humble community and click subscribe for free or support our work by purchasing the paid subscription.
All Beached posts are free to read but if you can we ask you to support our work through a paid subscription. These directly support the work of Beached and allow us to engage in more conversations with experts in the field of marine conservation and spend more time researching a wider breadth of topics for the newsletters. Paid subscriptions allow us to dedicate more time and effort to creating a community and provide the space for stakeholders to come together, stay abreast of each other’s work and foster improved collaboration and coordination.
One day Beached hope to donate a large percentage of the revenue from paid subscriptions to marine conservation organisations and charities to support their work too. Working together, we can reverse the degradation of our oceans and rivers.
